"Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less"

First book of 2021 and I highly recommend you add this one to your reading list this year. What a great way to start off the new year and a new chapter of my life with a book that talks about the need for simplification in our lives and work.

I’m a self proclaimed over-thinker, perfectionist, who often suffers from imposter syndrome. This combination is constantly pushing me towards the endless and often times un-rewarding pursuit of more. Do more, say yes to everything, and do it all myself have been unconscious mottos by which I’ve lived my life. “Essentialism” encourages just the opposite while remaining impactful. This book was easy to follow, had great practical stories, and offers life changing advice. I knew this book was for me when I read the synopsis.

Synopsis

  • “Have you ever found yourself stretched too thin?

  • Do you simultaneously feel overworked and underutilized?

  • Are you often busy but not productive?

  • Do you feel like your time is constantly being hijacked by other people’s agendas?”

“If you answered yes to any of these, the way out is the way of the Essentialist. Essentialism isn’t about getting more done in less time. It’s about getting the right things done.”

My favorite quotes

  • “Only once you give yourself permission to stop trying to do it all, to stop saying yes to everyone, can you make your highest contribution towards the things that really matter.”

  • “If you don’t prioritize your life, someone else will.”

  • “If the answer is not a definite yes then it should be a no.”
